Firstly, sorry for the lack of a March newsletter, March appeared to be a very busy month. A lot of time was spent with "Scare-ware" issues. This is a small rogue program that downloads into your PC then one day when you switch your PC on, it appears, informing you that you have hundreds of viruses, spy-ware issues and basically makes your PC useless until you pay for the full version, this is all a scam!. If the end-user (you) hasn't already tried to remove it or the registry hasn't been tapered with, this can be removed within a few hours, without having to format your hard drive.

•I recently moved broadband and telephone suppliers, simple process nowadays, all done on-line. Decided to save money and move to Talk Talk (again), to be honest, they cant be beaten on price and have there was no issues with setting up or using their service.http://sales.talktalk.co.uk/product/broadband/?portalId=GOO_BRA

•When looking for broadband, always do a bit of checking for the best deals, go to supplier websites and use their line test software, see how fast your connection would be. It really all depends on the telephone exchange your using, you can chop and change suppliers all you want, but the speed of broadband is controlled by the exchange. Its a complete waste of money if you order broadband that says you can get up to 20+MB and paying £18.99 a month but your exchange can only cope with 2MB. Hi Folks, this month is a good month for the monthly newsletter, I have broken the 100 contacts barrier, yip, I currently send out 110 newsletters ever month. Some people may glance through them; some people may drop the newsletters directly into their recycle bin, but the responses I get from people, tell me that the newsletters are a good thing.

• At the end of last month, one of my newsletter contacts was caught out by a scam phone call. They stated they never got round to reading the newsletters I sent to them, therefore never read anything about scam phone calls I had written about. They lost over £100 for freely available software. I was soon called upon to check over their PC and advise them to contact their bank. Edenside Computers Newsletter Request...

Hi folks

Its early February and I have started to build up this months newsletter. Edenside Computers now has over 100 contacts who receive the newsletter and I also receive a lot of positive feedback from people who read them. I have also updated the website a bit , just small adjustments, also added a "like" Facebook icon.

As I build the newsletter up through the month, I often add short stories of past work I have done for people and informed you of the solution to the problem I encounter. This month is no different but I would like to involve you in newsletter I receive at least 1-2 emails a day asking for help , advise or a solution to a problem someone has. I would like to add these to the newsletters I send out.

LINUX, A world without Gates... A perfect change!

This week I thought of trying out Linux again, it’s been years since I last installed it, there loads of different favours of Linux you can use as an operating system.

This time I installed Linux Ubuntu, it comes highly acclaimed, you can download and use it for free from the Ubuntu website. When you download it (it’s free), copy the software to disk and you can use the disk as a “live CD” (just put it in your CDROM drive, in your windows computer and use it, to get back to windows just eject your live CD and restart you computer)

Or you can install the Linux software direct onto your hard drive. The software is really smart, it works out what’s on your HDD at that time) I.e. Windows. It either can wipe you HDD and use the whole HDD for Linux or you can partition part of the HDD, Linux sorts it out for you (out of a 80GB HDD, 40GB for Windows / 40GB for Linux)

I am currently writing this blog using Linux as my operating system.

I was like many people years ago, worried about Linux coding and installing software that would or wouldn’t install in Linux. But Linux has moved on and up over the years and Ubuntu is different, it’s so easy to install and update; no need to worry about viruses either.

Right now as I type away, my Linux Ubuntu has Firefox, Adobe, Flash, Skype and Open Office plus lots more already installed. If you don’t like using Open office, install a program called Crossover, after that’s installed, you can install Office 2003/2007 and other software meant for Windows systems, no probs! I also use Google Chrome form my Internet.

Had no issues at all with finding my wireless router or my wireless printer. Also works with Plug and Play, use my USB Wireless mouse and all my external USB drives. No need to install addition disks or software to get your peripherals to work. It does exactly what Microsoft offers but it’s free and easy to use.

To be honest, if your wanting a computer for emails, word documents, Internet, etc, this is a perfect software alternative.

Welcome to Novembers newsletter. I first want to apologise for not sending out the last three months newsletters, I think I created a monster! The influx of emails and phone calls increased over the last few months increased, so much so, that I was always on the go and other things in my life fell to the wayside. I have started these newsletters again because some of my clients have found them very useful in the past and now miss them, due to popular demand here is November’s newsletter.

· What is a bad cluster? (A common issue!) A bad cluster is a hard disk cluster which has been flagged by the file system as being corrupted or damaged in some way and thus will no longer be used for storing data. HDD have physical 'heads' which read the surface. These heads comes loose or a piece flakes off. That is basically why a sudden bad cluster is almost always the sign of an impending failure. Of course you can just scratch your HDD by dropping it or incorrect shutdown, while it’s doing its thing. The "che-chink-che-chink noise" is usually the stepper motors failing. At the end of the day it’s a electro-mechanical device which is being thrashed; lots can go wrong.

How to protect yourself and your wallet while shopping on the net

There is tens of thousands of people around the world everyday lose money by shopping online, it’s become a way of life. If it looks or sounds too good to be true, it normally is!

Last week I heard from a friend of mine, they had ordered concert tickets a few months ago to see Pink at Hamden Park in Glasgow for £120+. They had ordered the tickets from a company called “Most Wanted Tickets”. (Sounds dodgy already!)

On the day of the concert, the tickets had still not arrived, the company phone number was ringing out and the website was down, they had done a runner! Sadly, my friend and her mates never got to see Pink in concert and were sorely disappointed; likely they had paid using a credit card and were able to get a full refund.

First and foremost, I always do my research, if I am buying something, I check out comments and reveiws from other customers; too many poor comments, I stay well away. I use Paypal, Google Checkout or my Credit Card. Use online companies you know or have heard about, like Ticket Master, Ebuyer, Argos.

Just because you have typed something into Google and it comes top of the Google search listing, doesn’t mean it’s the most popular and safest website to order or buy things. Companies pay to get a top listing to Google! A one off payment can see a company website sit at the top of Google for months if not years; Google doesn’t always work on how many hits a website gets, it also depends on how much a company is willing to pay to get a top listing.

Always do your research when shopping on line.... always! Keep your wits about you if you’re unsure, ask someone who shopping online or someone you know (and trust). It’s a bit like buying a second hand car; it may look nice and shiny on the outside but you might be in for a shock if you pop open the bonnet!

The world of online shopping is an ever-evolving one, and it can get confusing sometimes. For instance, if you make online purchases from the likes of eBay, Amazon, iTunes or Dell, you’ll have the option of opening a PayPal account and making your payment through PayPal. Is that the route you should take?

Here’s another scenario: If you shop on, say, Amazon.com, you can buy from third-party sellers who have nothing to do with Amazon.com. This can be fabulous for you as a consumer, but it also can create the need for you to be hyper-alert about protecting your information.

The following tips can help you navigate the world of online shopping and enjoy minimal hassles at the same time.

1. Understand how PayPal works. When you open a PayPal account, you authorize PayPal to take money out of your bank account or charge online purchases to your credit card. This can be a nice service if you feel uneasy about sharing your credit-card information with a wide variety of online merchants. Merchants never see your personal information; they just receive money from PayPal, an eBay company.

2. Decide how you want to pay. PayPal’s default manoeuvre is to withdraw money straight from your bank account rather than charge purchases to your credit card. If you want to pay with your credit card, you must remember to adjust the payment setting by clicking the “More Funding Options” link before you pay.

3. It’s better to use your credit card. That way you’ll be able to dispute charges and potentially get them reversed if anything goes awry. Such disputes will be much harder to resolve if the money has already been taken out of your account.

There are currently a vast number of victims of online ticket scams.

1. First contact your bank or Credit Card Company. If you paid on credit card, you should get a refund. But even if you used a debit card, you might find your account has fraud protection.

2. Check your home insurance. Some have clauses covering fraud protection.

3. Speak to Visa or MasterCard, whichever firm issued your card. They might be able to help.

4. Report the matter to the police. Don't let them tell you it is a "civil matter", it's not.

5. Once you have a crime reference number from the police, complain to Consumer direct on 08454 04 05 06.

The software we use on our PCs

It is really amazing sometimes when I am presented with a computer or laptop with software issues or processor speed issues. A lot of the time it’s because other software is running in the background that bogs down the processor.

A lot of these issues are sometimes due to your antivirus; they start up to do a scan and just drags your computer down to a snail’s pace.

A good few computers have graced Edenside over the years and nothing really surprises me. I have one main desktop PC that’s on 24-7 and laptop for day to day stuff. If computers are on all the time and using them, you must make sure your PC is fully bolted down with security and use a good antivirus. Edenside Computers test many of most popular software/ security applications out there and I thought that the list below would help you make the correct choices when deciding what a safe bet is when it comes to security. I currently use all the software below on all Edenside Computers, if I recommend something, I normally use it.

Here is the list of recommendations to help protect yourself and your computer:

1) Firewall: Microsoft has a software firewall built in to its operating system so as long as you keep your Microsoft security updated, you’re protected. There are 2 different firewalls in use here, the Microsoft firewall and also a hardware firewall, built in to your broadband router. These firewalls are automatically on by default and I use both. Some network guys say that you should shut off the Microsoft firewall to stop any issues, but I have never had any.

2) Antivirus: Interesting topic this one, there is so many antiviruses out there, but I have one very good antivirus that is completely free and worth a try. PLEASE NOTE: Do not have two antiviruses installed in your computer at the same time, they can conflict and cause operational issues! We have found that Norton and McAfee tend to bog your processor down and there is a few other issues we don’t use these two but we don’t want to get done for slander!

3) Spyware remover: Recommend you use Spybot Search & Destroy. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

4) Malware: We use Malware bytes Antimalware Remover; also helps prevent Scare ware issues. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

5) Scareware prevention: Big issue on the internet, we have documented this so often, so the following programs should help prevent it. OpenDNS, Ad Blocker, Web of Trust (just type the program names into Google and download)

6) Peerblock: PeerBlock blocks "known bad" computers from accessing yours, and vice versa. Depending on the lists you have it set up to use, you can block governments, corporations, machines flagged for anti-p2p activates, even entire countries! Whether you're sharing files with Bittorrent or just surfing the web, PeerBlock can help protect you from the bad guys. http://www.peerblock.com/

7) As for the Internet, if you want a fast access from page to page use Google Chrome, we have found Internet Explorer a low compared to Google Chrome http://www.google.com/chrome

There is a few very good FREE Antivirus programs out there that do exactly the same as the “paid for” ones. We are not the only people to have these issues; millions of people who use emails have similar problems, our own computer systems as updated and scanned everyday for viruses, malware, etc. A virus in a computer can spread like the common cold and we can’t stress it enough the importance of making sure your PC is clean, protected and security/virus software is up to date. Why buy used / second hand laptops

Most used laptops will easily complete all of the above mentioned tasks for you. What's really great is that for most current applications on a refurbished laptop, you won't notice a performance difference compared to a brand new laptop.

How is that possible to not notice a difference in performance between a brand new laptop and a refurbished or second hand laptop?

That's a good question. The fact is, most current software for your computer is not designed to need the high performance of a brand new laptop. Computer manufactures are moving so fast, that software makers simply do not keep up. Most current software will run on a computer 4 times slower than the fastest laptops made. What does that mean for you? It means that it's not necessary to spend £700 or more on a top of the line laptop. Depending on your needs from your
laptop, you may be able to buy a laptop for as low as £150. A £150 laptop will perform all the necessary tasks for most people. However, if you are looking for a laptop that will burn CD's and watch DVD movies,expect to spend £199 - £300.

Be very aware of larger Laptop computer companies offering cheap and sometimes free laptops, they will get there money some how. These computer companies will either make there cheap offers very hard to find and buy (like buying a cheap Air flight ticket offered in the Sunday papers) or try very hard to sell you extra warranty or to buy expensive anti virus software and other extras. These companies are experts at making offers seem too good to be true and hiding the real cost. Also bear in mind that you get what you pay for and to be able to sell a laptop at a cheap price it will have to be built with cheap components bearly able to last the warranty term.

Most refurbished laptops available are not the "low end" home user based laptops. Examples of home user laptops are: Compaq Presario, Dell Inspiron, eMachines, Hewlett Packard Pavilion, Sony Vaio, and Toshiba Satellite.
Refurbished,used laptops are almost always business model laptops that are off-lease from major corporations. Business laptops have parts available even long after warranty expires. Business laptops provide a better solution because they are the laptops provided by a company that are proven to work well.

Examples of business laptops are: Compaq Armada, Dell Latitude, Hewlett Packard Compaq Mobile/Business Workstation, IBM Thinkpad and Toshiba Tecra. Home user laptops, believe it or not, are usually testing grounds for new engineering of laptop equipment. Home user laptops are typically given shorter warranty, and are designed to last until that warranty expires. After the laptop's warranty has expired, the newer "experimental" home user model available uses different parts. Since the older models are no longer under warranty, and they use "out of date" parts, the manufacture no longer stocks the parts.

Therefore, when your home user laptop has an out of warranty problem (which it will), the parts that are available to fix your laptop are very expensive, if they are available at all. This leaves the home user with the attitude to "throw away and buy new", which is exactly what the manufacture wants you to do.

Since business laptops use technology that is proven to work, their parts seldom change from model to model. Due to this fact as well as the fact that business laptops are leased to corporations, huge stock piles of parts are
kept at the manufacture for extended warranties as well as out of warranty purchases.
