LINUX, A world without Gates... A perfect change!

This week I thought of trying out Linux again, it’s been years since I last installed it, there loads of different favours of Linux you can use as an operating system.

This time I installed Linux Ubuntu, it comes highly acclaimed, you can download and use it for free from the Ubuntu website. When you download it (it’s free), copy the software to disk and you can use the disk as a “live CD” (just put it in your CDROM drive, in your windows computer and use it, to get back to windows just eject your live CD and restart you computer)

Or you can install the Linux software direct onto your hard drive. The software is really smart, it works out what’s on your HDD at that time) I.e. Windows. It either can wipe you HDD and use the whole HDD for Linux or you can partition part of the HDD, Linux sorts it out for you (out of a 80GB HDD, 40GB for Windows / 40GB for Linux)

I am currently writing this blog using Linux as my operating system.

I was like many people years ago, worried about Linux coding and installing software that would or wouldn’t install in Linux. But Linux has moved on and up over the years and Ubuntu is different, it’s so easy to install and update; no need to worry about viruses either.

Right now as I type away, my Linux Ubuntu has Firefox, Adobe, Flash, Skype and Open Office plus lots more already installed. If you don’t like using Open office, install a program called Crossover, after that’s installed, you can install Office 2003/2007 and other software meant for Windows systems, no probs! I also use Google Chrome form my Internet.

Had no issues at all with finding my wireless router or my wireless printer. Also works with Plug and Play, use my USB Wireless mouse and all my external USB drives. No need to install addition disks or software to get your peripherals to work. It does exactly what Microsoft offers but it’s free and easy to use.

To be honest, if your wanting a computer for emails, word documents, Internet, etc, this is a perfect software alternative.
